EVE Online - HELLBORE by DouglasShuler EVE Online - HELLBORE by DouglasShuler
I have always been fascinated by the industrial side of EVE's starships. As I mine, I've often wondered how the ore gets from the blasted rock into the ship itself... so I conceived of a massive magnetic field that attracts the pulverized material and draws it into the processor units.

I like the idea of the magnetic field being so powerful that it has to be removed from the living areas of the ship, and that arcs of electricity form along the magnetic field as rock is pulled inside.

honestly looks more like a station then a ship. But looks cool.

I modelled it in haste. I've made a much cooler version since.

Interesting design. :)

They're actually making a dedicated mining frigate now.

Love the design, but hate to break it to you, a magnetic field would pull in bits containing iron, cobalt, or nickel. You are better off equipping with a gravitic beam to suck in the ores...

Out of curiosity, where do you see a problem with that? Also, it would pull in richer ores of magnetic metals faster, exactly what you need.

Unless you're hunting for more valuable metal. But a gravitic beam would catch anything and you had to sort out the rocks and get rid of them before processing the ores...

Many heavy Metals (gold, palladium, platinum) etc. require special techniques for extraction...mostly depending on what type of materials you are using for extraction. Most won't work with a magnetic beam...

Very cool. Good stuff man. What are you using for modeling again?

I model in Maya, given the choice. I can use Max, but I'm not very fluent with it.

I say, this was one of the most original concepts in the whole competition!
I know its a bit late, but still XD

I particularly like how it combines both an industrial look, and that of a luxury hotel XD
Very imaginative.
Another feature that I liked was the arcs of energy that come off the "Asteroid Material Collection Grid".
Very Unique!

All in all, this wouldn't look out of place in EVE XD

Thank you. I've considered re-tooling the Hellbore and improving it's design for future EVE contests, if there are any.

Not a problem :D
And that sounds like a good idea!!!
Personally, I think it looks great as it is, but then again, there is always room for improvment XD

I LOVE this design. I especially like how you've blended the industrialized look and feel with the very luxurious looking domiciliary section. I'd love to see more ships this thought out and modeled specifically for their purpose.

Thanks for the comments on the Hellbore. I'm a huge fan of the industrial side of EVE and often dream up designs for new (and more interesting) vessels. Of course, with over 3,000 entries, my chances of seeing my ship in game were small.

Oh, and you're welcome. Keep on designing, maybe you'll have one hell of a knock-out design ready the next time something like this comes along.

Hmm. If only there were a way to run a manufacturing corporation in EVE... and you could build whatever you wanted. I'm sure that'd be a runaway mess though.

I like the asymmetry on this design, and it's a good concept. It might need a little refinement to make it click for me, though.

That's a damn great idea you got there. I'm an industrial miner myself in Eve Online and even I didn't think of something like this. However, I can imagine how it could work out for the 0.0 alliances that have strict refining policies. It's more than likely they would allow only certified fleet industrialists (as in most trusted and loyal pilots) to process the ores into materials in a ship like this.

As for the hi-sec mining, it would create a lot of vacancies in the NPC stations if the ship was cheap. For something that size and design, I would probably pay at least 500mil ISK for that. Also, I can imagine the special modules needed for that design. I bet even the mining lasers and strip miners can't fit into that. I also wonder what the bonuses would be. Certainly it would have to involve bonuses for refining the ore on the ship.

Yay! Another industrial submission! Eve does need more diversity for the industrial pilots :-) The only thing is the round command bay doesn't match the heavy industrial plant looks as the rest so much to me. If it had that heavy miner look, soething more angular, would be great :)

That looks absolutely stunning!!!

Two small points of comment though. As a former merchant mariner, I couldn't resist:
1) When drawing in raw material at high speed (strong magnets, right?) the mining bay should be massively armored.
2) If, what I take as being the ship's control center, namely the circular pod on portside, is actually that, the navigation crew will have virtually no view towards starboard.

Aside from that, like I said, stunning artwork! Keep it up!

Well, one thing kinda interesting about eve storyline, is that a person doesn't use direct visuals to see. One needs to imagine scale. A ship like that is probably over half a km long. The staple for external viewing (player view) is via these camera drone thingys. According to the fluff :-)

Great looking design bruddah! Looks like ya have it all worked out in concept as well! I have to admit that I am not to knowledgeable with ships and the mechanics of how something like this would operate but I always dig your design work nonetheless!

Best of luck in the contest Doug! I am pulling for ya :)

Beautiful design! Great name. Looks very practical too. I can't quite tell where the ore gets swallowed up. But the processing center looks very functional.

I guess the extra gun portside of the collection chute is to protect the sensor bridge from wayward ore.
